Finding my focus and relaunching FeliciaCarter.TV

Have you ever tried playing a board game without instructions? Or gone on a trip but had no idea how to get to your destination?

In January, I launched FeliciaCarter.TV with an idea, but no real direction. I knew I had some great things to say and hoped a few people would validate me by reading them. A few people did. In fact, more than 1000 people subscribed to my blog in the first 18 days of the year. I got a little too excited and made a huge mistake. I tried to be all things to all people. I started shooting in 20 different directions trying to get every reader to read and engage with my stuff. In the following weeks, I saw more and more readers unsubscribe to my blog. I attracted fewer readers. I held my readers’ attention for mere seconds.

What did I do wrong? Everything. I tried to be a generalist and be everything to all people. I wrote about kids ministry, blogging, social media, productivity, goal-setting and more. I wrote about my life story and thought people would care. Guess what? Unless you know me personally, you don’t. And you shouldn’t.

Like many aspiring professional bloggers, I got discouraged. And guess what happens when you realize nobody is reading your stuff anymore? You quit writing.

But I keep wrestling with the vision God placed on my heart. I know He has a huge purpose for me one day. I know I have things to say and there are people out there who need to hear them. So I got busy searching for my niche.

Kids.

I love kids. I love learning about them, engaging with them, writing about them, watching them play sports, talking to them and playing with them. I love explaining them to other adults. I love kids.

So guess what FeliciaCarter.TV is all about now? That’s right – KIDS.

My content will now be tailored for an audience who wants to learn how to better connect to and engage with kids and teenagers. What does that look like? That is where you come in. I don’t want to make the same mistakes twice. I have created a very brief survey for my existing subscribers and for my potential audiences. I want to serve you in the best way possible.

You can find the survey here. It’s 10 questions. It is totally anonymous. I don’t ask a bunch of crazy demographic questions or long lengthy essay questions. It should literally take about five minutes.

Have you done the survey yet? Awesome. Let me get started on something I want to do this week.  These next seven days are going to be about creating the most fun and safe place for us to have conversations about how to better connect to and engage with kids and teenagers. Most of everything on this site will change drastically in the next week – design, content, categories, colors, pictures, etc. Each day, I am going to ask one question about you. All you have to do is select one answer and you’ll be helping me out. Today’s question is:

Last, but certainly not least, thank you. Thank you for hanging in there with me while I try to figure out my specialty and for loving me through it. You guys are the best, I promise.
